π² Do Not Help
Five types of people the Bible suggests not helping:
- The Lazy/Idle Person (2 Thessalonians 3:10): Those who refuse to work, despite being able to, should not be enabled. "If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat" is a principle to avoid sustaining laziness.
- The Unrepentant/Disruptive Believer (1 Corinthians 5:11): If someone claims to be a believer but lives in constant, unrepentant sin (sexually immoral, greedy, abusive), believers are advised not to associate or even eat with them, in hopes that separation leads to repentance.
- The Fool/Scoffers (Proverbs 19:19): Assisting a hot-tempered person or a fool who rejects advice often leads to having to help them again. The warning is against shielding them from the consequences of their own folly.
- False Teachers/Divisive People (2 John 1:10β11): Those who promote false teaching or cause division should not be welcomed into the home or supported, as doing so makes one a partner in their wicked work.
- The Ungrateful/Manipulative (2 Timothy 3:2β5): The Bible warns against being associated with people who are ungrateful, haughty, and unloving. Helping someone who is manipulative usually feeds into their destructive cycle rather than helping them grow.
These warnings are aimed at maintaining a healthy community and encouraging personal responsibility, not at withholding charity from the needy or humble.
